Why We Do It

Posted by T.O.M. in BLOG, Discipleship, Featured, Small Groups | Sunday, June 5th, 2011 Why We Do It

You don’t need to study statistics to realize that men have all but checked out of the modern day church. Their reasons vary, but the fact of the matter is sometimes churches miss the mark. We’re not here to judge, blame, or make excuses. Men have been a favorite target of the enemy for far too long, and we intend to take back ground by offering a field tested solution.

Third Option Men meet outside the church walls, bypassing any hang-ups men may have with organized religion. After all, we, the Body of believers, represent the Church according to Scripture; there’s nothing wrong with having a building per say, but the building isn’t the Body.

Having said that, we’d like to make one thing very clear; we’re not here to “sheep steal.” If your church already has an effective men’s group, we salute it. Allow us to be a supplement. Perhaps seeing our future goals will help you catch the vision:

- Offer assistance to individuals and organizations interested in starting an effective discipleship group

- Provide resources that enable individuals and organizations to better equip and disciple men

- ENGAGE™ (Revolutionary online application for those who choose the Third Option) COMING SOON!

- PROJECT ALPHA™ (Groundbreaking, real world scenarios. You’re not ready!) COMING 2012!

    Men,

I love that God led me here. I have it on my heart to have a city wide men’s ministry here in Tucson, AZ. I love the heart you men have to make yourselves available to help men. I look forward to gleaning and using the encouragement and practical information provided here.

    In Christ,

    Wayne

I know that there are lots of really bad churches out there, some that just need to die. And I agree that the church is about the people, not a building (which is why my family uses the term “we are going to church meeting” not “going to church”).

But we need to remember that the local church is a key part of God’s mission. Paul wrote his letters to LOCAL churches, not the universal church. Nothing wrong with getting connected through men’s groups, but don’t neglect the local church.

As I said, I’ve seen lots of bad churches. I was a children’s pastor for 4 years at a great church (that we still are a part of). Here are some issues that I’ve seen with children’s ministry: poor curriculum and poor leadership development. (http://differentway4kids.blogspot.com/2010/11/how-churches-can-fall-short.html).

It’s the same with churches as a whole. Many struggle with poor teaching, and poor leadership.

    Joey,

About your first comment, we couldn’t agree with you more! Sorry it took a while to post it- ironically, our moderator was getting ready for church.

As for your second comment, we’ve also seen this and hope to be part of the solution in the future. The bottom line is, our children’s teaching should begin at home. Sunday School once a week is good, but it will never (and was never meant to be) a substitute to the lifestyle models children experience at home. We reach the men, we potentially reach the dads. Third Option Dads happens to also be one of our long term goals as a ministry. Thanks so much for the comments and link, Joey!

    To the King!

Interested in more info on discipleship program description. Currently co-lead group that we started from scratch at our church. I am very concerned that we are not meeting the need of transitioning men who are college age. Also looking for proven approaches that make discipleship a lifestyle and not just a program to go through.

  • T.O.M.

    Richard,

All we can say is you’ve come to the right place. We hear from the same Spirit and can attest to the fact that what may have worked in the past simply needs a revamp. We know there’s nothing new under the sun, but some groups have just plain forgotten to include the Son in their lives apart from “church.”

Shoot us your phone number and best time to call: tom@thirdoptionmen.org We’re all about relationships and, to quote you, making discipleship a lifestyle and not just a program.

Couldn’t agree more with your comment above about being taught at home and the father is supposed to be the spiritual leader of the home. God created family before the church so we should concentrate on ourselves first constantly seeking his face then concentrate on our families but the church is the third establishment. We are not to forsake the assembly as a church regardless of where it takes place. But we were meant to fellowship with other believers.
