Imagine it’s Super Bowl Sunday.
The Giants step out onto the field. All pumped up and ready to take the Super Bowl away from the Patriots again. They have their games face on. All their gear in place.
Something strange happens when it’s the Patriots turn to run out onto the field. Brady and Company come running out wearing only their jock straps!
They are so confident in their abilities, think so little of their adversary, think the armor (pads) are so unnecessary and restrictive, they leave all their protective gear in the locker room.
Can you just imagine what giddiness the Giant team must be feeling? They are having their opponent served up on a silver platter. This will be a slaughter.
Play the game out in your mind. Who is going to be the victor? Who is going to be crushed? Which team will have players hobbling off to the sideline every play? The moral of the story?
Suit Up.
In Ephesians, Chapter six, the Bible says, “Put on the whole armor of God.” I was struck by the word “whole.” Who in the world would put on part of an armor?
Back in Paul’s day people saw Roman soldiers walking around in armor, but today the whole armor imagery isn’t quite as relatable. Football, though not nearly as deadly, is a battlefield or arena where we get to see two sides striving to win. Each trying to outdo the other. Their armor consists of helmets, shoulder pads, gloves, shoes, thigh and knee pads, and many other assorted pieces of protection. It is there to protect the body form the brute force inflicted play after play.
We have armor available to us. It is up to us to take it and put it on. There are far too many “Jock Strap Christians” walking around not concerned about the full armor. Not worried about their adversary or oblivious to the fact that they even have one, confident in their own abilities, finding things like Truth, Righteousness and The Word, too restrictive, too old fashioned and not necessary.
Jock Strap Christians find all that to be a bit legalistic. They like things to be a little free-er.
Do you think the enemy is afraid of them? Don’t you think he mocks them a bit? Taunts them? Plays with them like a cat that tosses around the mouse before he devours it?
Stop kidding yourself. Put on the whole armor. You’re going to need it.
